10-year-old Tennessee boy dies after being swept into storm drain
A tragic accident has left the Rutherford County community in mourning, in Tennessee. 10-year-old, Asher Sullivan, passed away from injuries sustained during a tornado on May 8. The young boy was playing with other neighborhood kids when he was swept into a storm drain and under neighboring streets. Despite being found and taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Asher succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.
Dr. Jimmy Sullivan, Asher’s father and the director of schools for Rutherford County, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook. He described the devastating sequence of events and praised Asher’s selflessness, noting that his son will become an organ donor. “He will have an honor walk at the hospital in the next few days and be celebrated as he is, a hero,” Dr. Sullivan wrote.
Neighbors were assisting with cleanup efforts following the tornado when the incident occurred. Asher was eventually found in a drainage ditch alongside eighth-grader Madden Moltz, who is expected to recover. Asher’s initial brain damage had worsened, leading to his fatal outcome. This tragedy comes just years after Asher’s older brother, Declan, battled leukemia for four years before overcoming the disease in 2022.
Dr. Sullivan’s emotional post highlighted the family’s profound grief and the community’s support. “We are broken-hearted, mad, and every other emotion at the same time,” he wrote. “Please keep our family in your prayers as we navigate a world without the purest one of us in it.” Asher’s family is planning a private ceremony to honor his life and has requested privacy during this difficult time.
