Wu Tang: An American Saga – using all 3 seasons to make a feature length film (2hr49m)

The Hulu series was an amazing watch. Even through the inaccuracies and filler, a great, engaging story was told about the clan. But what if the Wu Tang Clan received the “big screen treatment” like NWA did with the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ film? Thats what I tried to accomplish with this edit.

There are definitely way too many changes to list. But I’ll try to list as many as I can.

Changes:

-the film starts out with a new opening montage I created using narration from the RZA alongside flashes from the film

-this opening montage is followed by the ‘Jack the Rapper’ performance. We see that ODB is mad at RZA, but don’t know why yet.

-midway through the ‘Jack the Rapper’ performance, the edit cuts to Bobby’s childhood living with his uncle (very shortened). We see a young divine, as well as the moment Divine uses his ‘drug hustle’ to buy his family a new house. These scenes lead us into the present timeline, before the clan was formed in 1991.

-When we jump to 1991, Divine is already in jail.

-Raekwon and Ghostface beef storyline is completely cut. From my understanding, the beef was fictional anyway.

-first act of the film focuses primarily on Rza making music, method man and haze, and divine eventually getting out of jail without direction. The rest of the Clan is also obviously introduced. The Tommy Boy stuff is extremely shortened, in fact the ‘labels’ episode is cut completely. After we see Bobby record “We Love you Rakeem”, there is a short time jump to 1992. No ‘Atilla’ storyline.

-Cut around Joey Badass’ scenes as Inspectah Deck. The newer actor scenes are used as Deck, as it would have been jarring to use 2 actors to play the same character.

-the Ohio storyline is cut out completely (for runtime sake) so no Rza in jail, no ghostface shot, also no rae shot in leg.

-the time jump goes straight to showing method man and inspectah hanging in the hallway ‘putting in work’

-Bobby is talked about finally coming back in town.

-we then see Bobby talking to divine about finding his own place. He talks to divine about the music business and divine is convinced to join.

-Inspectah going to jail is cut out, and the kid getting shot in front of method man is cut. The traumatic moment with Haze that happens earlier is enough motivation for method man/the clan to record.

-power buys the recording equipment and the group records ‘M.E.T.H.O.D MAN’. No side plots with Gza getting phone number, no ODB and landlord. Straight recording session.

-protect ya neck recording session: the stuff showing Bobby’s mind while making the beat is shortened and rearranged.

-recording is followed by the fever performance. The episode where they go to the colleges is cut out for the most part. The final scene of that episode where they hear themselves on the radio is still there.

-after the fever, we have a few recording sessions, followed by ODB and RZA fighting. We finally make it back to the moment at “Jack the Rapper”, and we now know why ODB was upset at RZA.

-when we cut to Jack the rapper again, there is a brief voiceover of the real Rza talking about the situation with ODB

-after Jack the rapper, we cut to 1995. There is no plot line with Rza and his girl. No plotline with Rza losing his music in a flood.

-ODB’s drug addiction is addressed and shown, though we don’t see him jump out of the window like in the show.

-ODB and RZA talk again, create shimmy shimmy ya, followed by the clan on the tour bus episode (shortened)

-ugod situation with son is shortened. A lot of the solo album stuff is shortened. There are none of the ‘allegorical films.’ They were dope but can’t really work in a film, they’re more standalone. We do see Raekwon talking about wanting to use the purple tape, as well as Gza talking about completing his album. Method solo album is mentioned, as well as inspectah wanting one.

-all of this followed by making Wu tang forever, followed by the final performance.

-final scene with the clan having thanksgiving dinner and taking a picture is shortened. This scene fades to real life footage of the clan sitting eating dinner (from the of mics and men documentary). Rza voice over saying that no matter how long it’s been, they’ll always be family ( something to that affect) We then see the real clan talking about ODB’s death.

-added childhood picture of ODB at the end with ‘in memory of’ text.

Well that’s a long list. And there are definitely WAY more changes. I mean, I cut down a 3 season 30 hour show into a 2hr49m feature film. You’ll just have to watch for yourself. I do recommend watching the actual show as well. There’s a lot of gems in there I had to cut out that I didnt want to, but it doesn’t take away from how great the series was.
