Finally some form of justice!

After 10 hours of deliberations, the jury reached a decision and found all three white men accused of killing Ahmaud Arbery GUILTY!

Travis McMichael, his father, Gregory McMichael, and their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, were found guilty of murder and other charges in the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery.

Travis McMichael, who fired the fatal shots, was found guilty on all nine counts, including malice murder and four counts of felony murder. His father, Gregory McMichael was found guilty of all but 1 (malice murder) of the 8 charges brought against him. He was found guilty of four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit a felony. He was acquitted only on a malice murder charge.

Their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan, was found guilty of 3 counts of felony murder, one count aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and criminal attempt to commit a felony. He was not convicted of malice murder, one count of felony murder and one count of aggravated assault.

According to CNN, Travis faces a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole on each of the four felony murder charges, 20 years on each of the aggravated assault charges, 10 years on the false imprisonment charge and five years on the criminal attempt to commit a felony charge. 

Gregory faces a sentence of up to life in prison without the possibility of parole on each of the four felony murder charges, 20 years on each of the aggravated assault charges, 10 years on the false imprisonment charge and five years on the criminal attempt to commit a felony charge. 

William faces a sentence of up to life in prison without the possibility of parole on each of the murder charges, 20 years on the aggravated assault charge, 10 years on the false imprisonment charge and 5 years on the criminal attempt to commit a felony charge. 

President Joe Biden reacted to the guilty verdicts, stating,

“Nothing can bring Mr. Arbery back to his family and to his community, but the verdict ensures that those who committed this horrible crime will be punished.”

“Ahmaud Arbery’s killing – witnessed by the world on video – is a devastating reminder of how far we have to go in the fight for racial justice in this country. Mr. Arbery should be here today, celebrating the holidays with his mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, and his father, Marcus Arbery. Nothing can bring Mr. Arbery back to his family and to his community, but the verdict ensures that those who committed this horrible crime will be punished,” his statement read.

“While the guilty verdicts reflect our justice system doing its job, that alone is not enough. Instead, we must recommit ourselves to building a future of unity and shared strength, where no one fears violence because of the color of their skin. My administration will continue to do the hard work to ensure that equal justice under law is not just a phrase emblazoned in stone above the Supreme Court, but a reality for all Americans.”

As expected, cheers erupted in the courtroom after the verdict was read.

Judge Timothy Walmsley asked Ahmaud’s father, Marcus Arbery Sr., to leave the courtroom after he yelled out “Woohoo!” when the first guilty verdict was read.

In the hallway of the courtroom, Wanda Cooper-Jones, Ahmaud’s mother, sobbed.

On February 23, 2020, Wanda’s life changed forever. Her 25-year-old son, Ahmaud Arbery, was fatally gunned down in broad daylight while jogging through a neighborhood outside Brunswick in Glynn County, Georgia.

Two white men – Gregory McMichael (a former Glynn County police officer turned District Attorney’s office investigator) and his son, Travis McMichael – chased Ahmaud (an innocent man), cornered him and then shot him dead during a struggle with Travis over his shotgun. A third man, William “Roddie” Bryan, recorded the murder.

On the day Ahmaud ran through the neighborhood, the three men automatically assumed he was a burglar and began chasing him down. No arrests were made until almost THREE months after Ahmaud’s death. Footage of Ahmaud being killed made its way online and that really put the spotlight on the case.

Now, the men have been found guilty of killing Ahmaud! We’re keeping our fingers crossed they are sentenced properly.
