14 Apr U.S. Army Sergeant Arrested & Charged With Assault After Confronting Black Man Walking In Predominately White South Carolina Neighborhood
Roomies, unfortunately, there has been another racist attack on an unarmed Black man that was caught on camera. On Monday, an incident occurred between a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jonathan Pentland, who confronted a Black man named Deandre in Columbia, South Carolina, after he was walking in a predominately white neighborhood. The incident was caught on camera by Shirell Johnson and has gone viral. The outrage has caused residents in the community, celebrities, and activists to stand up for Deandre and call out the Pentland family.
In the video shared over 21,000 times on Facebook, Jonathan and his wife can be heard verbally harassing Deandre. As tough of a situation as it was, Deandre kept his composure, unlike Jonathan, who continued to be the aggressor and told him to “Walk away” several times. He even took matters a step further and pushed Deandre as he tried to walk away and deescalate the situation. If assaulting Deandre wasn’t enough, he continued harassing him by telling him that he’s “In the wrong neighborhood motherf***er. Get Out!”
Sometimes in instances like this, it may seem like it can take a while for the victim to receive justice but not in this case! According to reports from AP, Jonathan has been arrested and charged with third-degree assault. Jonathan is currently being held in the Richland County jail, and records don’t show that an attorney is representing him.
In addition, an official at Fort Jackson, where Jonathan is stationed, has released a statement via Twitter condemning Jonathan’s actions. BG Milford Beagle Jr. tweeted, “The leaders at Fort Jackson in no way condone the behavior depicted in the video posted recently. This action deeply impacts our community–the neighbors in the Summit, the city of Columbia, Richland & Lexington counties, and our Army family,” BG Beagle said.
He continued, “I ask that our communities and leaders exercise a degree of patience, affording Sherriff Lott and law enforcement investigators to account for the full measure of events before, during, and after the incident that was recorded.”
Shirell shared an update on Facebook and mentioned that Deandre was doing ok but still processing the incident. Roomies, let’s keep him in prayers!
