Roommates, utter chaos erupted today at the U.S. Capitol, as hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the building to stop the Electoral College from certifying Joe Biden’s presidential win—and one of those involved has died. A woman, who was part of the rioting group, was shot by police after trying to break inside the Capitol building.
An unidentified woman who was shot inside the U.S. Capitol during the violent pro-Trump protests has died, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed. Police have not yet released the identity of the woman, however that information is expected once her family has been notified. It is also unclear right now which member of the authorities fired the shot that killed her. Additionally, at least seven rioters were injured during the jaw-dropping act of violence.
The shooting occurred after violent supporters of Donald Trump breached the U.S. Capitol as the joint session of Congress was beginning to count the electoral votes and affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election.
The Capitol complex was locked down and lawmakers were evacuated, halting the count after only two states had been completed. Troops from the Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. National Guard were deployed to help control the violence and disperse the mob.
Several hours after the initial breach, law enforcement announced the Capitol had been secured. Meanwhile, members of Congress from both parties have signaled they wish to resume counting the electoral votes tonight, once it is safe to do so.
