Prosecutors Announce Officer Who Shot Jacob Blake Will Not Face Charges (Update)

Roommates, if you recall, we have been keeping you updated on the August 2020 shooting of Jacob Blake. He was shot several times by a Wisconsin police officer on August 23rd in front of his family. As we previously reported, Attorney Benjamin Crump confirmed that the shooting resulted in Jacob becoming paralyzed from the waist down.

Today, it was announced that Kenosha County District Attorney, Michael Graveley, would not be charging officer Rusten Sheskey for shooting Jacob, according to CNN. There will also be no charges filed for the other two officers involved in the incident. The Wisconsin Justice Department identified the officers in September 2020 as officers Vincent Arenas and Brittany Meronek.

Graveley said, “It is my decision now that no Kenosha law enforcement officer will be charged with any criminal offense based on the facts and laws.” During the investigation, Rusten told investigators that he used deadly force against Jacob because he was afraid. He continued saying that while attempting to flee the scene, Jacob was trying to kidnap a child in the backseat of the vehicle.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice claim Blake had a knife in his possession, and the weapon was found on the floorboard of his vehicle. However, Jacob will not be facing any charges. Jacob’s family attorney Ben Crump, and co-counsels Patrick A. Salvi II and B’Ivory LaMarr released a statement shortly after the announcement.

The statement read, “We feel this decision failed not only Jacob and his family but the community that protested and demanded justice. Officer Sheskey’s actions sparked outrage and advocacy throughout the country, but the District Attorney’s decision not to charge the officer who shot Jacob in the back multiple times, leaving him paralyzed, further destroys trust in our justice system. This sends the wrong message to police officers throughout the country.”

Roommates, let’s continue to keep Jacob and his family in our thoughts at this time.
