02 Jan [Discussion] Why aren’t hip hop collectives more prevalent today?
It seems like every artist is taking a solo career direction. I was looking up the best hip hop groups of all time, all of them where 90’s groups. I’m not talking about duos/collabs with 2 artists (RTJ, Kids seeghosts, etc). I’m talking about those collective groups like Wutang Clan, NWA, Bone Thugs, De La, AOTP, Cypress hill etc.
Today, it’s pretty rare to see a group who consistently records/performs together. All I can think of is ASAP mob (a stretch, they are mostly solo careers), Migos and Brockhampton.
What changed? Is the paycheck more attractive for a solo career? Did social media help push solo artists? Is it more of an underground thing?
Edit: Didn’t mention all the modern groups, but they where definitely more common in the mainstream than they are now.
