HOT 97’s Ebro Darden Says Colorist Comment About Tinashe’s Name Was A ‘Terrible Joke,’ But Twitter Is Still Going In On Him

HOT 97’s Ebro Darden has been getting dragged on social media after a clip resurfaced from an interview he did with Tinashe where he said some colorist comments about the singer’s name. It’s quite cringy….

HOT 97 radio host Ebro Darden is trending heavy on social media for some comments he made during a 2013 interview with singer Tinashe. A clip of the radio personality dubbing Tinashe’s last name as a “ghetto a** name” for a “light skinned” girl has resurfaced and folks are letting him have it, respectfully.

In the 2013 clip, Ebro asked his co-host, Peter Rosenberg, to ask the “2 On” singer (who was 20 at the time) to reveal her last name.

”Kachingwe,” she responded.

”Now, can we point out how light-skinned she is with a ghetto a** name, though?,” Ebro said.

“It’s not a ghetto name, she has an African name,” Peter responded. “Her name is Nigeri – Zimbabwean. My point is, that’s not ghetto, she has an African name.”

“Sometimes these ghetto names are actually African,” Ebro said.

Wait, what?

The Twitter user who shared the clip wrote, “yeah tinashe better than me because i would’ve became real disrespectful.”

Folks reacted to the clip where Ebro was dragged and schooled on his ignorant comment:

So having a “ghetto” name is synonymous with being dark skin? Are we also going to dismiss the cultural significance of African names and how there are actual ceremonies behind them? I can’t tell if this is willful ignorance or just blatant stupidity

Seeing a trend of white people having more sense than black men.

This is indeed embarrassing.

The fact that Rosenberg, a white man, is correcting Ebro, a black man, about African names is doing my head in. https://t.co/foar4n6z3L

After receiving backlash, the Apple Music executive retweeted the clip, calling it a “terrible joke.”

Well, folks are STILL letting him have it:

“It’s not a ghetto name, it’s an African name.” So which continent houses the ghetto names? pic.twitter.com/vG0fr0MmE7

Okay but rewatching ALL of your interviews with her: the misogyny, disrespect, literal s*xual harrasment making everything about s*x, xenophobia cloaked in comedy, and more is simply not okay. She’s more than owed an apology for it ALL.

Please do better n learn from it.

What even makes a name ghetto? Is it just because it was thought up by a black person? Or plain old racism denigrating anything associated with blackness as less than, unsavory, and ghetto?
