07 Jan Joe Biden Addresses The Nation Following Pro-Trump Protestors Storming The U.S. Capitol—“This Must End Now!”
Roommates, following the violent Pro-Trump mob that descended on the U.S. Capitol earlier this afternoon, Joe Biden delivered a fiery speech addressing the nation. Visibly upset, Joe Biden called for an immediate end to the riots and protesting, stating that it “must end now!”
President-elect Joe Biden promptly addressed the nation during an impromptu speech calling out the throngs of Pro-Trump protestors who stormed outside the U.S. Capitol and those who managed to break inside.
Biden had planned to deliver a speech focused on how to revive the economy and provide financial relief for small-business owners reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, however shortly before he was to begin speaking, rioters broke into the Capitol building, reaching as far as the Senate floor.
Biden’s speech contained the following remarks:
“Our democracy is under unprecedented assault unlike anything we’ve seen in modern times…an assault on the rule of law. I call on this mob to pull back and allow democracy to go forward. This is not decent, it’s chaos. I call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward. The words of a president matter, no matter how good or bad that president is. At their best, the words of a president can inspire. At their worst, they can incite.”
In an address that took only about 10 minutes and was televised against a split screen of the still-occupied Capitol building, Biden attempted to remain calm, while he was visibly upset at the events that unfolded. He also reiterated the themes that were at the center of his successful presidential campaign.
Biden called on Trump to “go on national television now, to fulfil his oath and defend the Constitution and demand an end to this siege.” Instead, Trump posted a pre-recorded video thanking his supporters and even going so far as to say he “loved” them…never once slamming their violent actions.
