05 Jan 2021 Grammy Awards Postponed Due To COVID-19 Rising Numbers—Ceremony Likely Moved To March
#Roommates, if you were looking forward to this year’s Grammy Awards, you’re going to have to wait a little longer. Despite the Grammys initially scheduled to be held this month, the ceremony has now officially been postponed due to the rising numbers of COVID-19.
@RollingStone reports, the 63rd annual Grammy Awards were set to be held on January 31st—but that date is confirmed to be postponed. The delay comes as concerns have increased regarding COVID-19, which is currently spreading rapidly in the Los Angeles area where the Grammys are held. Although organizers of the show have not formally confirmed a new date, various inside sources reportedly said that the new date will likely be at some point in March.
This year’s Grammy Awards show had already planned to be limited, such as deciding to no longer have a live audience and only allowing presenters and performers on-site during the show. Additionally, nominated artists are not allowed on-site either, which is very similar to the 2020 Emmys where nominees appeared and accepted awards remotely.
The state of California has seen a disturbing surge in COVID-19 cases following Thanksgiving and the holiday season, setting a new single-day record of 74,000 new cases on January 4th. In Los Angeles County, the hospital system is currently so over-populated that COVID-19 patients are often forced to wait in ambulances for hours until hospital beds open up, while the L.A. County Emergency Medical Services Agency has directed ambulance crews to ration oxygen and not transfer patients who have virtually no chance of surviving.
