28 Nov Recent Study Shows U.S. Divorce Rates Are Falling & Marriages Are Actually Lasting Longer
#Roommates, according to recent studies it seems couples are sticking it out as U.S. divorce rates are falling! According to Institute For Fam, divorce in America has hit a record low as of 2019. For every 1000 marriages in the last year, only 14.9 ended in divorce, according to the American Community Survey data from the Census Bureau.
In fact, this is the lowest divorce rate in the last 50 years! Taking a deeper look at the stats, it seems both divorce rates and marriage rates in America are on the decline. People are taking longer to get married and attributing it to their careers and pursuit of higher education. College-educated and economically better off Americans are more likely to marry and stay married.
According to a TIME article, despite popular belief, divorce rates have steadily declined since the 1980s. As we previously mentioned, millennials are taking a little longer to walk down he aisle. What was once considered a ‘right of passage’ into adulthood, is now a more thought out decision. Areas like education, career, travel have all taken precedent for so many people who have prolonged getting married and statistic back that notion ten fold. According to TIME: “Census figures released on Nov. 14 show that the median age at first marriage in the U.S. is now nearly 30 for men and 28 for women, up from 27 and 25 in 2003. This does not mean that Millennials have stopped living with someone they fancy, though. Cohabiting is becoming a norm in most Westernized countries.”
Earlier this week a screen grab that asked “why aren’t marriages lasting like our grandparents generation?” went viral. And though many people in the comments attributed it to social media as the reason why, turns out, marriages ARE lasting. Just something to think about Roomies!
